paper CL_LiteraturayLingüísticatxt286 - : Following Yin's classification of case studies (1984), the present investigation shares elements of the exploratory and descriptive types, in that much -if not all! - the work on LLSs has focused on language as a whole, and not on one particular linguistic skill, pronunciation (or accent ) attainment in our case; it is descriptive in that it attempts to furnish an explanatory set of mechanisms and behaviours used by the participants, responsible for their successful L2 accent attainment. A case study has been preferred with two subjects who share the features outlined by Thomas (2011) on the grounds that, given the characterisation provided about both subjects, they correspond to what has been termed 'outliers', which presents great potential for insights into the phenomenon the researcher seeks to understand.

In classroom discourse, teachers interact with students bringing them into thinking, representing and communicating social world from three dimensions: time–space, causality and evidentiality (Oteíza, 2009). The multimodal perspective on communication considers the semiotic potential of the various resources that are intertwined in discourse to create meaning in context. This research (Fondecyt 1130684) is carried out from the multimodal approach, systemic functional linguistics and appraisal theory, to explore the semiotic options of three case studies: three teachers of history in the 1st year of Secondary School . The corpus consists of the audiovisual record of three introductory lessons within the same curriculum unit: World War ii. After a multimodal discourse analysis, findings indicate that each teacher chose different combinations of semiotic media and modes to teach the same content. Concerning disciplinary

Besides, although most of the articles, ten, are empirical studies, this issue also contains two case studies, one literature review, and one book review, all of which were written by authors coming from at least seven countries: Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Mexico, Spain, and Venezuela . Finally, in spite of the predominance of some topics, such as writing, professional identities, translation, which run through the different sections, the articles present a wide range of topics, methodologies and settings.

paper CO_Íkalatxt293 - : Contrary to the case studies, the pedagogical experiences present the results of two very different interventions which were carried out in two distinct contexts: a research club for students doing a licensure program in foreign languages at a Colombia university (García, Rolong-Gamboa & Villar ), and a non-formal adult education program for government officials working with speakers of Haitian creole in Chile (Sumonte). In spite of these differences, they both show how the interventions contribute to the development of (intercultural) communicative competence, proving that it is possible to use very different innovative ways to achieve this objective, namely: the planning, production and edition of an academic journal issue (García, Rolong-Gamboa & Villar), and the implementation of a three-stage model in which the migrants act as linguistic mediators (Sumonte).
